The concept of a mental workout is that we have to train our minds in the same way we might train our bodies. We wouldn't expect to be able to run a 10k without putting in some time training for it. I the same way, our minds need practice if we are to make progress in our psychospiritual development. The research show that there is actually a difference in the brains of people who are proficient in this type of exercise - the text calls the "contemplatives". Their brains show a progressive increase and synchronization of gamma waves when they asked to develop a compassionate mental state. Even more impressive to me was that seem to have a higher level of gamma-wave activity at other times which suggests long term results and progress.
If I can be persistent in training my mind through the use of mental workouts, I could expect to see benefits in all areas of my life. Less stress, more peace and serenity, better physical health. Being able to access, at will, a source of calm and compassion within myself would be bring benefits to my psychological health.

Kelly,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I am all for attaining "less stress, more peace and serenity, and better physical health"! I never before really thought about the advent of a mental workout, but it makes so much sense when you think about it. It is relatively comforting when you think about it though because it helps me to know that I do not have to be perfect at these relaxation exercises the first time around! Rather, through consistent and continued practice, I will be able to eventually learn to let my mind relax and my body calm. There is so much evidence now a days about the mind-body connection and I think it's great that we are learning how to do these exercises to be that much closer to reaching our mental goals!

I have to piggy-back on Aimee's comments, she is so right. It seems weird to think about doing mental exercises, but it does make sense when you relate it to physical health. I would not expect my body to do something great without properly training it beforehand, so I should expect the same with my mind. I also think it is great that we are having to participate in these activities, definitely not anything I would have done on my own!
ReplyDeleteHello Kelly,
ReplyDeleteYou are correct my dear. You hit the nail on the head! It is very important to see the
whole: mind, body, and spirit. We have to share with the world that all of the whole is important, not a part of it. Mental training can transform the mind by reducing disturbing emotions that cause anger, hatred, fear, worry, confusion, and doubt while enhancing positive emotions such as patience, loving kindness, openness, acceptance, and happiness. The mental transformation, acting through mind/body connection, provides enhanced resistance to mental distress and physical disease expands our healing capacities and promotes well being. Is that awesome or what? It is important to know that just as we rest the body after a work out, we must rest the mind. In the bible they fast and pray. It is very enlightening to know that the bible is so old, but yet it still applies to us in 2010. Let us take this knowledge and let the world know the simplicity of healing the mind. Have an awesome day and thank you for your beautiful words.
