Unit 10 - Final Summary

1. Review your unit 3 personal assessment of your psychological, physical, and spiritual well-being. Reflect on these areas . How did you score yourself on a scale from 1 to 10 in unit 3? How do you score yourself now? Has the score changed? Why or why not?

The one score that was significantly different in the second assessment was spiritual well-being. Initially I scored myself higher in this area than I did the second time. At the beginning of this course I really didn’t understand the potential and the importance of this aspect of health. I felt I had been doing fairly well but after taking this course I can now see there is a lot of room for progress.

2./3. Review the goals and activities you set for yourself in each area. Have you made progress toward the goals? Explain.

I have made progress in all three areas:
Physical – I have been more consistent in my workouts and have been looking for a yoga or tai chi class to further the mind-body connection through exercise.
Psychological – I have been spending time outdoors everyday because I know that a connection to nature feeds my psychological well-being.
Spiritual – I have been engaging in prayer and meditation on a regular basis. I have connected with a small group of people who live in my area through an on-line community. They meet regular to discuss topics related to spirituality and spiritual growth. I am planning to attend their next meeting later this month.

4. Summarize your personal experience throughout this course. Have you developed improved well-being? What has been rewarding? What has been difficult? How will this experience improve your ability to assist others?

I would summarize my personal experience by saying that my eyes have been opened to how essential spiritual and psychological well-being are to integral health. I now view physical health as only one aspect rather than the entire measure of it. My own spiritual progress has been rewarding and I feel that I have just begun to grow in this area. I have gained a greater awareness of my mental states and have learned how to reduce stress more quickly. I am excited to see where my quest for spiritual progress takes me. Some of the meditation exercises were difficult. I think I will use what has worked well, leave the rest and continue to look for ideas that will help me in this area. It will be much easier for me to talk about the benefits of spiritual develop as it relates to over all health when I am working with clients. I am hoping that my own practices will give me more insight when working with others.

To be honest, although I thought this course sounded interesting, I wasn’t really sure about it and if I was going to get anything out of it that would really be useful. Now at the end I can say that this course really changed my concept of health and wellness. I have enjoyed this blog and getting to read about others’ experiences. I learned as much from my classmates as from the course material. Thanks you all!!

  1. Kelly,

I think it is so interesting how you scored yourself lower the second time around within your spiritual health. But after reading your reason as to why, I COMPLETELY agree with you. I definitely have gained a new found awareness for what spirituality means as a result of taking this course that I did not have before. And from the difficulty of those of those exercises, I can see just how far of a way I have to go! I, like you, have a deeper appreciation of the importance of mental and spiritual health on one's comprehensive sense of health, and I know that the readings and exercises in this course will be revisited long after I leave Kaplan! I have greatly enjoyed your contributions in this class, and I wish you the absolute best in all you do!

  2. Hello Kelly,
I enjoyed your outlook on life from the very beginning. I am so happy that after taking this course you can now see that there is room for improvement. Through life, I have learned to always stay open for improvement in every area. I really enjoy learning, sometimes it can be a pain, but oh well we grow and that is positive. Isn’t it amazing that sometimes how much in this life we do not understand and like magic a class like this comes along to help us? This aspect of life is very important for our health and wellness.

Making progress in all three areas is great. Being more consistent in your workouts and looking into tai chi and yoga to promote your well being through exercise is excellent. Spending time outdoors everyday is a definite connection to our natural world and will nourish your psychological well-being. Engaging in prayer and meditation on a regular basis and connecting with a small group of people on line in your community will help to further your spiritual growth. Keep your development amplified.

You sum up your personal experience in this class by saying that your eyes have been opened to how indispensable spiritual and psychological well-being are to integral health, and I can truly say too that I was blind, but now I see. It is great to view the body, mind, and spirit as a whole. We know that if we do not take care of any area, it will surface in the others. Spiritual progression is so important, and to me I have always had a high score in that area and my physical, however, I had shut my mind down to the negative ways of the world. Now I can take the negativity and right away replace it with positivity without having seizures. So like you I have learned how to diminish stress more quickly and it is extremely beneficial for my sanity.

Continue to stay excited about where your spiritual pursuit will take you. I smile as I write that because I know sometimes I feel so euphoric, and when I go around people they comment about it. I believe that you can look forward to your own practices giving you more insight as you work with others.

From the beginning, I knew this was the course I needed to expand my whole being, especially my psychological aspect due to my shut down. I am so glad that even though you had uncertainties about the class, you took it anyway. Now at the end we both can say that the course changed our model of health and wellness to some degree. I enjoyed the blogs too. Overall I believe the Professor had a lot to do with the positive outcome in our growth and development. Her nurturing skills appear to be very strong and deep. She cares for all. Thank you for being a wonderful classmate. I wish you continued success in everything you do in life. Keep moving forward in your health and wellness.

  3. Hey Kelly,

Well, seems like you've also made some positive changes as a result of your experiences in the class! That's great! I know it's difficult to change as we get older...I'm knocking on the back door of 40 and can't believe it! I think it's imperative, however, we do what we must to take care of this life we've been given. All the postive things we do for ourselves now will help us make the most of our time here.

I applaud your honesty and your efforts at becoming a better person; not only for yourself but also for your family.

Best of luck to you in your continued steps forward in your "toward well" walk!

    Michelle

  4. Hi Kelly,

I am glad that you were able to embrace the spiritual and psychological aspects of this course in relating it to integral health. I think it's wonderful that you were able to connect with an online community to share in prayers and spirituality. I'd encourage you to continue to participate and as time goes on, perhaps you will find additional resources that will help you progress and grow. The course has given me a fundamental foundation to grow in psychospiritual development and I will continue to practice meditation, prayers and visualization techniques long after the class is over. It has opened my mind and heart to the pain and suffering of others, and more than anything, all I want to do is help those people minimize that experience and reduce their own stress. The course has made a positive impact on my life and I hope I can encourage others to explore the practice exercises so that they can create goals towards a more satisfying existence as I have. I wish you well with your goals and I hope you have much success with spiritual growth in the future.
